Journey 2: The Mysterious Island 3D--Spoiler-free Review

When I won tickets to this one, I thought to myself, "OH Shiiiiiiittttt!!!". I ne'er saw the first one, Journey To The Centre Of The Earth, with Brendan Fraser *<3 Wikipedia <3* in 2008, but I had read the book by Jules Verne. My only knowledge of this movie was from a TV spot--it had Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson and he was being chased by a giant reptile. Having read a great deal of Verne, including The Mysterious Island, I was, "WTF?! What is this bastardization?!" I went to the screening, resigned. I hoped that it would be so bad that it would be at least funny.

I was pleasantly surprised. It had Michael Caine in a prominent role--how do you not advertise that?! It also was put together better than the commercial would lead you to believe. While this film wasn't an instant classic, it's about average. I enjoyed the bickering between Caine and Johnson. I'm still on the fence about whether Jules Verne is spinning in his grave or is pleasantly amused by this refunctioning. Hopefully, it'll introduce a new generation to Jules Verne.

O'erall, I give Journey 2: The Mysterious Island a 6.9 out of 10. Sure, it could have been better, but it could have been so much worse. Kids will enjoy it and parents won't be trying to pluck out their eyes or gouge out their ears!

Bonus Short!

I forgot to mention this! Before the movie started, there was a classic Loony Toons short. It featured the voice talents of Mel Blanc with fresh animation. An unexpected treat!

The Hobbit I: An Unexpected Journey: This trailer was in 3D, although it was the same awesome trailer that has been making the rounds. Having my anti-3D glasses, I don't know if it made any difference whatsoever, but it is The Hobbit!!
